A trail for every ability
When you visit Pocahontas State Park, there is a good chance you will encounter someone who is a member of one (or both) of the park’s volunteer organizations: Friends of Pocahontas State Park and the Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists. These dedicated and enthusiastic people assist park staff at educational programs, special events, service workdays and stewardship efforts. Sometimes, an individual may propose a new initiative to bolster the stewardship, education, recreation, and outreach opportunities within the park.
In 2023, members of the organizations began discussing the development of a project to build an accessible sensory nature trail within the park. A steering committee was created that included past and present organization leaders to help define the project goals, and the first draft of a proposal for the Accessible Sensory Nature Trail at Pocahontas State Park was developed in January 2024.
The trail is envisioned to be a destination experience at Pocahontas State Park, designed specifically for the disabled and neurodiverse community to offer enjoyment and education to every visitor. As part of the project proposal, the steering committee developed the following guiding principles desired for the trail:
Inclusive and welcoming
Easy to find and navigate, attractive, well-maintained, and fun
Combine recreational, educational, and sensory experiences that help develop a strong connection to the natural world
ADA-compliant surfaces and facilities for people with special needs and abilities
Encourage movement, offer spaces for reflection, teach scientific principles and concepts, and promote curiosity
Become a highly sought-after destination for local residents and travelers
The trail is envisioned as a collaboration among Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Pocahontas State Park management and staff, Friends of Pocahontas State Park, and Pocahontas Chapter Virginia Master Naturalist. Together, these organizations have the necessary expertise and resources to evaluate and plan the design and oversee the installation of the ASNT project.
