Focusing on our community
In March of 2025, we partnered with 6 Wheels Consulting to gather key insights from four focus groups: Mobility, Neurodiversity, Parents & Caregivers, and Blind/Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing. These discussions centered on participants’ experiences in outdoor spaces, their ideal environments, and the tools, design elements, and resources needed to make nature inclusive and welcoming for all.
Across all groups, participants emphasized the deep emotional and physical benefits of spending time in nature for emotional well-being, physical engagement, and social connection.
We discovered several key elements that were common for all groups, including:
Incorporating thoughtful universal design that is inclusive from the beginning, not added on later.
Water features and terrains that provide a sensory-rich landscape with a mixture of sun and shade, smells, textures, sounds and views are ideal.
Surfaces like compacted aggregate, permeable paving materials, or low slope boardwalks can make it easier for people using mobility devices while also supporting environmental sustainability.
We gathered feedback on programming, staffing, and technology needs, as well as a desire for information to help visitors plan their visit in advance and easily navigate the park and trail once they are on site.
We are grateful to everyone who participated in a focus group and offered their time, expertise and valuable insights into planning a trail that is welcoming, safe and accessible for every person. We hear you:
“Design for inclusion, not just compliance. Nature is for everyone.”
